Why was I charged a foreign-transaction fee?

Every now and then PayPal charges an overseas-transaction fee to our American customers, but this seems to be on very rare occasions. As this doesn't happen very often, it's hard to know when they apply the charge, as it's something we don't see. We've found that this sometimes happens when funds need to be drawn from a linked card or bank account rather than using existing funds from your PayPal account (i.e., we have found that if there are funds already in your PayPal account, this charge is not applied).

Please contact us below if this is the first time you have been charged a foreign-transaction fee and you would like to discuss it. However, for future purchases, we recommend either ensuring that you have funds in your PayPal account or that you use a credit or debit card to complete your purchase instead.
